Nanomechanical Characterization of Enzyme Induced Carbonate Precipitates
نویسندگان
چکیده
The mechanical properties of calcium carbonate minerals formed by enzyme-induced precipitation (EICP) were studied using nanoindentation. Two types precipitates considered: (i) a “baseline” precipitate, synthesized via urea hydrolysis in an aqueous solution urease enzyme, urea, and chloride; (ii) “modified” from similar solution, but with the inclusion nonfat dry milk. While both predominantly comprised calcite, X-ray diffraction Raman spectroscopy indicated broader peaks modified implying differences crystal structure two precipitates. Both polycrystalline had higher average indentation hardness (H) lower modulus (M) compared values for single calcite crystals reported literature. ductility was quantified ratio M/H. precipitate M/H, greater ductility. increased results resistance to crack propagation. In sands biocemented EICP addition preferential at interparticle contacts, may contribute relatively high unconfined compressive strengths low contents.

Characterization of Precipitates with the Atom Probe
The parameters that can be measured from atom probe random area analyses of small spherical precipitates and platelets have been examined with a combination of simulation and geometrical models. The results indicate that the probe aperture should be less than 50% of the diameter of the precipitate in order to reliable measure the true composition in a significant proportion of precipiates.
متن کاملOpto-nanomechanical spectroscopic material characterization.
The non-destructive, simultaneous chemical and physical characterization of materials at the nanoscale is an essential and highly sought-after capability. However, a combination of limitations imposed by Abbe diffraction, diffuse scattering, unknown subsurface, electromagnetic fluctuations and Brownian noise, for example, have made achieving this goal challenging. Here, we report a hybrid appro...

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) has been used to show that the average distance between proteins decreases when the protein is immobilized within polymer scaffolds, indicating that the immobilization process is inducing aggregation.

Nanomechanical properties of indium nanowires like structures fabricated on quartz substrate by trench template technique, measured using nanoindentation. The hardness and elastic modulus of wires were measured and compared with the values of indium thin film. Displacement burst observed while indenting the nanowire. 'Wire-only hardness' obtained using Korsunsky model from composite hardness. N...
متن کاملSynthesis and Characterization of Polyamide-66/Calcium Carbonate Composites
Polyamide-66(PA66)/CaCO3 micro- and nano-composites were prepared using a polymer solution method at filler loading of 0, 1, 2 and 3 weight percent. Nano-size of CaCO3 was synthesized by micro-emulsion technique. The material was characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR and UV-VIS techniques. XRD results of composites suggested that CaCO3 particles are found in the amorphous phase of the semi-crystallin...
